A New Chapter for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea

A New Chapter for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea

A little more chocolate, a few new surprises and the same sense of theatre.

Our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired Afternoon Tea has been refreshed with a brand-new menu from Executive Chef Edward Dutton and Head Afternoon Tea Chef Christoph McGuire, created in partnership with the Roald Dahl Story Company.

The new menu brings a completely new selection of savouries and sweets to the table, while the Fizzy Lifting Drinks, theatrical touches and unmistakable spirit of Willy Wonka remain very much part of the experience.

A fresh take on the menu

The idea behind the new menu was simple: to transform the traditional afternoon tea into an unforgettable treat.

“We wanted every course to bring a sense of discovery to the afternoon tea experience,” says Christoph McGuire. “Each sweet and savoury item has been inspired by the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with familiar flavours presented in unexpected ways.”

It starts with Willy Wonka’s chocolatey chariot, a rich hot chocolate served with an assortment of toppings.

Then come the savouries: Classic Cucumber Cream Cheese Sarnie, Magnificent Mushroom Melt, the Entire Roast Dinner in a Sandwich and Willy Wonka’s Smoked Salmon Quiche.

The scones follow, with Raspberry and White Chocolate and Plain varieties, served with ‘Snozzberry’ Jam, clotted cream and warm Chocolate Dip from Willy Wonka’s river.

And then, the sweets.

The sweet side of things

There’s Violet Beauregarde’s Marshmallow Marvel, a ‘Blue as a Blueberry’ Éclair, Pineapple Cream ‘Whipped with Whips’ and a ‘Nutty Crunch Surprise’. The Caramel Chocolate Milkshake, mixed by waterfall, is accompanied by Fabulous Fluffy Floss. It’s quite a departure from the usual afternoon tea milkshake, but then this isn’t quite a usual afternoon tea.

For Managing Director Janine Marshall, the refresh is about giving the experience a new chapter without losing what made it so popular in the first place.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea has become one of One Aldwych’s most loved experiences. This refreshed menu marks a new chapter, while preserving the sense of theatre and escapism that has made the afternoon tea such a favourite over the years.”

For younger guests

There’s a menu for little ones too, with Roald Dahl-inspired treats including the ‘Green Caterpillar’ Crunch and a ‘Square Sweet that Looks Round’, alongside a choice of colourful Fizzy Lifting Drinks.

It’s designed with younger guests in mind, although we wouldn’t be surprised if a few adults find themselves eyeing up the children’s menu too.

What’s in the teapot?

The signature Fizzy Lifting Drinks return, alongside a selection of bespoke teas: Chocolate Noir, Caramel Noir, Lemon Verbena, Berries & Hibiscus and Lychee & Rose.

For something a little stronger, smoking cocktails and Champagne pairings are also available.
