Meet The Designers : I

Meet Robert Angell

Our exciting refurbishment is well underway now, but what do we know about the designers who are transforming the rooms and public spaces? Our two part series will delve into what inspires our wonderful designers and what they have in store for our delightful new look. Today let’s meet Robert Angell whose London studio Robert Angell Design International (RADI) is creating the hotel’s rooms and suites.

“A unique design requires a unique approach” is the vision Robert Angell brings to each project he takes on. “This enables every project to be designed individually,” he says.

“We consider every detail and material and through experience, we fuse these together to provide a truly luxurious feel. This helps us create timelessness that gives an established look.”

A protégé of David Collins, Angell is responsible for some of the world’s most beautifully designed restaurants and hotels, including The Connaught, The Berkeley, Lime Wood Hotel, Belmond Grand Hotel St Petersburg.

Enthusiastic clients who are passionate about their work inspires him greatly. “I also get a lot of my inspiration from my travels, I’m always going to galleries, markets, old furniture shops where there is so much visual inspiration.”

For One Aldwych, he explains “Guests no longer expect just a home from home, as everyone is so design savvy. The architecture was ambitious in its day, and it seems only right that the design continues to be forward thinking and prestigious.”

Angell likes to have the ‘big idea’ for each project and a story behind the design. So his vision for the hotel when it reopens in the spring is “a simple interior architectural backdrop layered with simple, classic upscale pieces to evoke the style of a grand residence.”

The 102 guest rooms and suites are sophisticated and inspiring, details are paramount and materials are warm in tone, soft in architectural form. Bathrooms will be more luxurious than before, with amazing natural stones, mirrors and lighting including large walk in showers. “The design is light and fresh, with layers of interest to add a comfortability to the overall vibe, “ he says.
